If you are shopping for a flat panel television, you have almost definitely been approached by a following dilemma: what type of a flat panel television to get – Lcd or Plasma? If you are like most people, you probably don’t care about all the fancy technologies behind Lcd or Plasma displays (which differ greatly by the way), but you should know that choosing the right display for your TV room is crucial to achieving 100% satisfaction with picture quality.

You probably heard about the difference in picture quality when comparing plasma and Lcd TVs.  Older LCD technology didn’t allow for a smooth transition of fast moving images and caused drag – this is no longer a factor, since Lcd TV manufacturers have finally found a way to avoid this. Although plasma continues to be a leader when it comes to black level control (contrast level when displaying dark and black images), Lcd TV’s are starting to level with plasma through addition of technologies like Lcd backlighting.  So don’t make your decision based solely on the hype that plasma TVs are better when it comes to picture quality.

Room size, lighting conditions, application and budget are the main factors that can help you determine which type of flat panel TV to settle for:

LCD Installed Over FireplaceLighting conditions: fronts of plasma TV screens are usually more prone to getting reflection when used in a bright room with no adequate shade control (blinds, etc).  Also, if you have recessed or ceiling lights directly above the TV location, make sure you are able to control them separately from the rest of the lights in the TV room, since those lights will also contribute to glare, if you settle for a plasma TV, of course.

Room Size: Plasma TV is a winner in this category, since it has a much larger viewing angle (how far you can sit lo the left or right of the TV before you start losing picture quality), so if your room has a wide sitting area, plasma TV would probably be more fitting.

Application: Plasma TVs still suffer due to burn-in issues. If you play video games or watch CNBC twenty four hours a day, settle for an Lcd TV.

Price: Plasma TVs are generally less expensive, if you are buying a 50″ and up flat panel TV. Smaller models usually fall in the same price range as the Lcd’s, so if you are planning to buy a 32″ to 50″ try to settle for an Lcd – again, newer technology, no burn-in and you can use it in a bright environment.
